British General Benedict Arnold Burns Richmond, Virginia 5 January 1781On 5 January 1781, the American turncoat, Benedict Arnold, torched Richmond, Virginia whilst serving as a British General. Beset by money problems and small thoughts, Arnold had betrayed his country, not because he was not promoted in the Continental Army, but because others were promoted ahead of him and he had huge debts riding over him. Ironically, Arnold would go on to never fit into the British Army either, as he did not have the pedigree to become a senior general. Arnold finally died in Britain in 1801 in England.
